Tri-Lens
The
Well Heeled Radar Reflector
The
one to be SEEN
with.
This
Product, has been made to SPECIAL ORDER and comes
with a hollow
aluminium mounting shaft, which apart from the standard Mast mounting
arrangement , allows by the use of a special adapter, for a wide range
of
navigational lights to be mounted on top of the reflector, and the
wiring to be
passed directly through the body.
This
feature is especially useful when mounting the Tri-lens Radar Reflector
on both
Rib A Frames and Fast Craft Roofs. See jpeg for typical mounting
arrangements.
Solas V regulations
encourage all vessels
regardless of size to carry a suitable radar reflector.
All
vessels over 15Mtrs must carry one that has been approved to the
ISO8729
requirements.
All
vessels less than 15Mtrs should fit the biggest unit practical.

As
a result of the recent Ouzo tragedy the M.A.I.B carried out a full test
of the
current range of radar reflectors, with some very interesting results.

The
summary of its test are that:-
The
Sea-Me is
a good example of an active reflector (RTE) exceeding the requirements
of the
current and future ISO 8729 at heel/elevation angles of up to 15
degrees, but
offers no performance at S-Band.
The
Echomax 230
narrowly failed to meet ISO8729 during this testing, the main drawback
was a
RCS drop-off above an elevation angle of 10 degrees.
The
Standard Tri Lens
does not meet ISO8729 as the peak RCS was too low at 4m2.
However
its consistent RCS response out performed most of the other
reflectors when heeled over beyond 10 degrees, (including the Echomax)
It
is concluded that either the active Sea-Me, Standard or Large Tri-Lens
radar
reflectors are the best reflectors at heel and elevation angles of over
The
Sea is an active element which is rarely at rest, when you lose
all power i.e. both engine and electrical, and are being tossed about,
and in
need of help, the Tri-Lens passive reflector comes into its own.
